Pray for the unreached Indian Ocean Islanders

Where are the Islands?

That’s a question we can’t really answer for security reasons. Suffice to say, they’re in the Indian Ocean! They’re strongly influenced by Islam and open proclamation of the gospel invites opposition, for our missionaries, and conversion to Christianity can bring persecution for Island people. By living and working in these communities, learning local languages and understanding culture, it is possible to develop relationships through which the gospel can be shared. Bringing skills like English teaching and vocational training, lends legitimacy to our missionaries’ presence and helps the communities.

What do they believe?

Each island has its own distinctive people group, with their own language, culture and beliefs, but all practise some form of Islam, mixed with a variety of traditional animistic beliefs, occultism, ancestor worship and fear of the spirit world. Some younger people, who have studied abroad, are influenced by more fundamentalist Islam, while others are questioning their traditional beliefs and becoming more materialistic. There are few who follow Jesus.

What is being done to reach them?

TIMO (Training In Ministry Outreach) teams have lived and worked on the Islands in recent years. Now several individuals and families are continuing that pioneering work longer-term. English language classes, literacy & numeracy teaching for women, and medical work are bringing positive benefits to the Islanders. Friendships which have been formed enable missionaries to speak about Jesus, pray for people and encourage the reading of Scripture.

Prayer from AIM’s Daily Prayer:

Give thanks for the news of three new believers on the Indian Ocean Islands. Pray for endurance to continue pressing on towards Christ on their own while their main Christian mentor is and for their hearts to grow in love and devotion to Jesus.

Give thanks with Ruth for the bound books of Genesis, Exodus, Luke and Acts and Bible audio players that were delivered to the Indian Ocean Islands recently. One believer left his book of scripture on his office desk at work and told Ruth that everyone who has come into his office has picked it up and then asked for a copy. Pray that each would be supplied with one and that God’s word will open their eyes to the truth of the gospel and their need of Jesus.

Give thanks that workers on the Indian Ocean Island have received their first shipment of Genesis and Exodus, translated into one island’s local dialect. For the first time, they have scripture in bound books that look beautiful and look like respected holy books, in the local dialect. The translated scripture was brought over from Tanzania by a friend on a boat. Please pray for these first books to be the start for all scripture to be made into such respectable-looking books. Pray for the other copies to arrive without issue. Pray for safe distribution amongst believers and beyond, that hearts would be transformed by God’s word.

    Pray for global mission

How should we pray for ourselves and others? Every day our staff, and the pastors and missionaries who join us, hear an opening prayer shaped by Luke 10:2. ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.’
