Joan Mackenzie

Sent from Bishopbriggs Free Church of Scotland

Joan worked alongside rural hospital and clinic staff in Chad to improve maternity care and to reach out to the unreached with the gospel.

Chad is among the worst countries in the world for maternal mortality rates, standing at about 12 in every 1000, with a neonatal mortality rate of 114 in 1000. Figures like that, alongside all that Joan had seen in Chad, led her to start work with a new health project in 2014. She worked alongside a Chadian midwife to train village women who would in turn teach other women. This was all through a Chadian hospital that Joan had been involved with for three years. The goal of the teaching was to improve the health and well-being of women and babies during pregnancy, childbirth and beyond through health education and encouraging women to attend antenatal clinics.

This ministry was a practical means of sharing the love of Jesus Christ. Joan gave good and compassionate care to Chadian women and education and support for Chadian health workers. Alongside this she continued to pray and actively seek opportunities to share the gospel with unreached people as the Lord led and to encourage and build up Christians in their faith and witness to the unreached.

Joan retired from serving with AIM in July 2019.

Give thanks that Geoff Donaldson, one of AIM’s Mission Advisors in Ireland has had a smooth ending to his role within AIM and has followed God’s calling to take up the position of Ireland Director for Europe Christian Mission (ECM). Pray for him as he settles into his new role and that he would rely on the Lord for his strength.

Please pray for a number of retired AIM missionaries who are currently in hospital; especially for Netty Sinclair who has just received a difficult diagnosis and is very ill.

Joan is in the UK on her final Home Assignment before retiring from missionary service. “As most of you know I will be retiring from AIM at the end of July and will be in contact again with all my supporters before then. I would like to find opportunities to serve in the area where I’m living and will perhaps find part-time work. I continue to have an interest in involvement in diaspora work especially among Muslim/African women as well as work with the elderly, and hopefully will find out more about various opportunities in the coming weeks. Please pray for God’s leading for my future service for him.”

Joan Mackenzie is in the UK on her final Home Assignment before retiring from missionary service. “I am hoping to buy a home with some help from Whitefield’s housing trust and just this week I heard that they may soon be able to help me buy a property. Hopefully I will hear more in the next week or so. Your prayers would be appreciated as time is passing and I will be retiring officially at the end of July.”

“I continue to be on Home Assignment with AIM International, which involved meeting supporters and speaking at various places to report on the work I’ve been involved with, and to thank people for their support. It is almost four years since my last Home Assignment, so I have a lot of catching up to do, including trips to various places. So I will be working officially with AIM until next July, when I expect to retire. Over the coming months I hope to undertake and English as a Second Language course in order to be involved with the Diaspora of Africans and others who are living in Scotland. From next year there are also some areas of AIM’s work that I can help with alongside our Scotland Mobiliser Ruth Box. Having now left Chad for good, the Lord is leading me in a different and challenging way but I know that he goes before me and is with me through all the changes. Pray that I will be open to whatever he would have me do in the future.”

Chad

Chad became independent from France in 1960. Since then, its politics have been characterised by violence, coups and insurgencies. It is a secular state with freedom of religion. Muslims are dominant in government, trade and the army, although they are only just the majority religion (approx 53%). LEARN MORE
