Elle is part of a medical ministry team on the Indian Ocean Islands. She has been asked to train some midwives in the care of small babies. Many of the midwives aren’t paid – they are counted as ‘interns’, waiting for a paid slot to open up (although the hospital couldn’t function without them). On the days they’re not on shift, they are usually making money by working in their family shop, sewing, and baking things to sell. If they are wanted at the hospital on a day they’re not on shift, they have to be paid enough that they won’t lose money being there, and have their food paid for as they won’t be at home to cook. Therefore, a training day for all midwives requires significant funding. Though Elle’s team often helps the hospital out by paying small amounts for stationery, medication, equipment etc, they don’t want to provide large amounts of money. They want them to find locally available, sustainable sources of funding. However, the local public health funding body has closed. Please pray that they can find another locally active source of funding so that training can continue.
