Outreach intern in northern Kenya

Join a team working with the Rendille people in northern Kenya. Provide additional resource requested by the local church to help them multiply their mobilisation and outreach work to unreached people groups in the region.

Background

The Rendille people are on the cusp of being taken off the list of unreached people groups. They are a nomadic people who live in a harsh and demanding area of northern Kenya. However, the church in Korr is growing in size and strength and is spreading out from Korr into the desert of northern Kenya. We are looking for someone to come alongside the church with skills to enable that people movement among the Rendille.

Ministry and type of work

You will learn from the local church how to do outreach and mobilisation in a remote, semi-nomadic tribe. They are very keen to do this work but have asked for help with personnel and resources.

Mostly during the week, you will participate with the church using whatever skils you have, this could be anything from building, to childrens work, youth groups, sports ministry. There are nearly unlimited opportunities here for someone who is a self starter and willing to get fully involved.

At the weekends you will join the outreach team or evangelist as they travel to remote villages. This will often require overnighting so you must be willing to camp or sleep in a makeshift home.

Experience and Qualifications

We are looking for people who:

  • Have qualifications higher than high school level for immigration purposes
  • Have some Bible training (desirable)
  • Are willing to visit local people where they are
  • Work with their own hands
  • Are creative in finding work-around solutions to problems
  • Are Team players
  • Are patient, flexible, willing to learn, willing to take initiative in gospel witness and outreach,
  • Teachable in learning cultural and local customs, and language

We are looking for people to come and work at being a “belonger” in the community, and for someone who will pursue strong relationships with the Rendille and be able to develop a kinship with that society.

FAQS

The chances are that yes, you will be able to speak to friends and family in one form or another. This may be on the phone or via What’s App, text or Skype, but the likelihood is that there will be some form of communication that you will be able to use.

The easiest way is to fill out the contact us form on our website. Once we receive that form, we’ll be in touch to arrange a time to discuss together how the Lord is leading you.

The approximate cost of a placement is £600-£1,800 for 1-4 weeks, £3,000 for 3 months, £4,500 for 6 months, and £7,000 for 12 months (though this will vary depending on the country and type of placement).

Don’t forget to ask your church about ways they can help you to raise support. You can also earn the money, apply for grants, organise a sponsored event or hold an information evening about what you will be involved in. Further guidance on raising support will be given once you have been accepted onto the short term programme.

These people came to my home and talked about Jesus and Lazarus. Lazarus was someone who wanted to see Jesus, and Jesus came to his home. My wife and I accepted Jesus as our Saviour. We gave the belongings of the spirits to be burned. We are free.
