Madagascar Training Team

Do you have a passion for the unreached? Would you like to complete a year of on-field mission training? 

Background

Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, and home to around 25 million Malagasy people. Despite the gospel having been preached on the island for over 200 years, many of them remain unreached. In some areas there is enthusiasm amongst believers in sharing the gospel with those around them and in many areas of Madagascar, people are free to preach the gospel. But cross-cultural mission remains a challenge. Animistic traditions are woven into Malagasy culture, and particularly in many of the coastal areas, Islam is growing.

AIM has been engaged in Madagascar since 1980 in different outreach ministries including student work, theological education, church planting, healthcare ministries, Bible translation, ethnomusicology and more. The city of Mahajanga, a port city on the northwest coast of Madagascar, is the capital of the Boeny Region. Mahajanga is a favourite tourist destination for Malagasy tourists and international travellers.

There are opportunities to engage with multiple unreached people groups present in Mahajanga through this team, two of which are among the least reached people groups of Madagascar. 

Vision and Strategy

Building on previous partnerships between AIM missionaries and local believers, churches and networks, this training team will be focused on serving, supporting and mobilising local evangelical churches, in addition to gospel outreach to the unreached.

Establishing connections with the local people is key. Making the most of community life and investing in the welfare of families can open doors to deeper friendships and opportunities to share Jesus with people.

There are many ministry opportunities such as English teaching, vocational-technical training, health ministries, music-related programs and student ministries which are important in the context of poverty.

Ministry and Type of Work

Starting in August 2023 for a one-year term.

The Team members will be trained and equipped in outreach to unreached people groups, partner with local believers and come alongside them towards sharing Jesus as well as learning the local culture and language.

Qualifications and Experience

  • No qualifications are required but you’ll be expected to use your skills in a ministry setting.
  • Proven church ministry experience
  • Cross-cultural experience (desired but not essential)

What are the personal (not academic) characteristics required?

You will need to be teachable, flexible, bold, a team player and have a passion for the unreached.

Other Information

This is a one-year training opportunity. After the year has finished, members will move on to a ministry assignment immediately after the year.

That depends upon your profession and where you go. If there is a need and it is appropriate then the likelihood is yes. If your professional skills are not needed or appropriate then that is not to say that you are not needed, as we would hope that you’d still have skills that are transferable.

On almost every assignment you will need to learn another language and sometimes we recommend some language training before you leave. We recognise the value of building relationships and making disciples by communicating with people in their own language. This is especially true for those applying long term. Language learning is part of the TIMO programme, and when necessary, language school (in the UK, Africa, or elsewhere) is an option. In some positions and areas English might be enough to get by, but we strongly emphasise local language learning as a way to engage and reach local people with the gospel.
