Matthias has joined an Inbound team in Torit, South Sudan in July 2022.

Matthias has been a follower of Jesus for just over seven years. After High School he went to an international Bible School in Australia, where for the first time he had a glimpse of a multicultural environment. He then studied Mechanical Engineering while building up a small business in photography and videography.

2020 was a challenging and painful year for Matthias due to the Covid-19 pandemic and personal circumstances, but it was also the year he grew the most personally and spiritually. He noticed three things about himself: He is still single, he loves English, and God has blessed his photography and videography. He took these things to heart and began the journey to become a missionary photographer. This path led him to AIM.

Matthias is deeply passionate about helping to spread the good news of Jesus Christ with the gifts that God has given him and would love for you to partner with him in his journey in Africa. In July 2022 he joined an Inbound team serving in Torit, South Sudan. The Inbound programme supports new missionaries as they begin ministry by providing orientation into missions work with AIM through mentorship and practical training. The Inbound team trains members in ministry, language-learning skills, building relationships with churches, and team unity, among other core AIM values. Team members then move on to permanent ministries within AIM.

Matthias is hoping to serve with AIM Stories after his time on the Inbound team. AIM Stories is a team of storytellers, sharing the story of God’s work in Africa. They visit different AIM missionaries, capture their ministry, and spread news of the miracles, joy and hope of their ministry. Their goal is to share to the local church around the globe what God has been doing; to inspire those who give and pray to missionaries; and to motivate people to take part in cross-cultural mission worldwide.

Could you partner with Matthias in this work?

Matthias is producing a magazine every year to give to his supporters that contains stories, photographs, Bible verses, songs and challenges to help you get to know him and his work better. You can also receive a cpoy from him for a one-off donation. Details of how to receive a copy are on his blog, which you can access by clicking on this link.

Latest Prayer News

Pray for the Toposa people from South Sudan. They are migrant cattle herders so they don’t stay in one place long enough for there to be a settled ministry amongst them. Pray for the team among the Toposa. They feel the enemy is fighting against their reaching out among the Toposa, Nyangatom and Jiye people. Pray for their school ministry, teachers, and their spiritual life. Other places among the Toposa area are closed and the people are not welcoming the gospel. Pray for the existing churches, evangelists, and apostolic teams that the Lord will give them breakthroughs in reaching out.

Please pray for the Laarim people in South Sudan. PrayAfrica.org shares: “David and Tessa have been blessed by their times with Khalifa and Nateote, both strong believers who love Jesus! Pray for Nateote to grow in her understanding of the Word as Tessa does Discovery Bible Studies with her. Pray that as she and Khalifa grow in their knowledge of the Word, they would “become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which [they] shine as stars in the universe as [they] hold out the Word of life” (Philippians 2:15-16), and for many more in Cauwa to become true followers of Jesus.”

Charles, Knight and Juma are some of the young South Sudanese men who are passionate about taking the gospel to unreached villages and people groups in South Sudan. They are going by foot, bicycle and motorcycle to villages within a day’s walk of Torit. Pray they will be trained, equipped and supported, and remain enthusiastic as they face many challenges as they ‘go and make disciples of all nations.’

Early last week we received the devastating news that Peter Lokai, an Africa Inland Church pastor who worked with AIM missionaries in South Sudan for the last five years, was shot dead at his home in Torit. Please pray for Peter’s familyfriends, church, and those he worked closely with as they grieve.

The de Leeuw family are currently in the Netherlands because of the Covid-19 pandemic and will return when possible. “While the Netherlands is going into stricter lockdown again, the opportunity has come up for us to return to South Sudan. Last week we were able to arrange many things. We are still waiting for our South Sudan visas. If everything goes according to plan, we will fly out of the Netherlands on Thursday 5th November. If the journey is successful we will be back in the Laarim on Sunday 8th November. The journey will be long and with more regulations than we are used to, but we look forward to be able to go to our home again. In the Laarim we will first be in quarantine for 10 days and then take up our work in the community.” Please pray for everything to fall into place so that the de Leeuw family can return to their ministry among the Laarim at the beginning of November.

South Sudan became the world’s newest country on 9 July 2011. It was the outcome of the 2005 peace deal that ended Africa’s longest-running civil war. The majority of the population adhere to Christianity. Only 18% call themselves Muslim unlike Sudan, which is 97%. LEARN MORE
