Tim & Bronwen Heaton

Katie & Jamie

Sent from St Stephen’s, Twickenham

Tim Heaton is currently serving in the UK as AIM Europe’s mobiliser for the south of England and Wales. Previously the Heaton family lived and worked in Pemba, northern Mozambique amongst the Mwani people. Tim was the Unit Leader for Northern Mozambique and both Tim and Bron were team leaders for the Mwani Outreach Team.

They started working in Mocímboa de Praia, a remote fishing town 100 miles south of the Tanzania border, in 2005. After learning Portuguese and the local tribal language, Kimwani, they were involved in evangelism and discipleship through Bible storying, English teaching and running a pre-school. They moved to the provincial town of Pemba in 2011 where they continued their work among the Mwani. Pemba is a larger town with better resources than Mocímboa, e.g. running water, electricity and a supportive missionary community.

Mozambique has religious freedom, with much of the south being nominally Christian; the coastal areas however are heavily influenced by Islam. Living and working among the Mwani proved to be tough, especially seeking to share the Christian faith in ways that were culturally sensitive and that built for the long term.

Give thanks that Geoff Donaldson, one of AIM’s Mission Advisors in Ireland has had a smooth ending to his role within AIM and has followed God’s calling to take up the position of Ireland Director for Europe Christian Mission (ECM). Pray for him as he settles into his new role and that he would rely on the Lord for his strength.

Please pray for a number of retired AIM missionaries who are currently in hospital; especially for Netty Sinclair who has just received a difficult diagnosis and is very ill.

On Tuesday 10th April a number of us from the office attended a thanksgiving service for the life of Colin Molyneux who served with AIM in various capacities for over 35 years, including in Kenya, Madagascar, Chad and the UK. During the service Peter Maclure, a retired AIM missionary, read out a tribute to Colin’s work with AIM which you can read here. Please pray for Colin’s wife, Rosemary, and the wider family as they continue to mourn a much loved husband, father, brother and grandfather. Give thanks for the ways in which God blessed and used Colin throughout a life which has been characterised as “a life lived for Jesus”.

Tim & Bronwen are coming to the end of their Home Assignment, having led an Outreach team among the Mwani people in northern Mozambique. Tim will start working as one of our Area Mobilisers in September. “Our time in Suffolk has come to a close and there was yet another emotional week at school as we said goodbye once again. Boxes, suitcases and furniture were piled up but this time we were not getting on a plane but moving to a rented house in Chippenham in Wiltshire… We chose Chippenham as a good base for Tim’s new role with AIM as regional coordinator, for which he will need to do a fair bit of travel across the south of the country. Tim already has several appointments lined up to meet with missionaries returning from the field and at Christian Unions where he will present the challenge to students to take the gospel to the unreached peoples of Africa. Can you believe that in the 21st Century there are still over 1,200 different people groups in Africa that have no viable church and no one communicating the gospel to them! Many of these are in places difficult to access but that doesn’t make the need any less urgent.  AIM has set a new Vision 2020 to engage and reach such groups. Pray with us that God would mobilise an army of workers both Western and African to take his love and truth to these people.

“The Kids Club is still going strong and it’s been great to hear many of the children go back to their homes singing the worship songs about Jesus being our saviour.  It’s an amazing way that God has used to take his message in to the very heart of the family!  An outcome of seeing so many children around (44% of Mozambicans are under 15!) is that Rusty, one of the very practical members of our team, had the vision to build a simple playground for the kids to leave as a thank you to the local community. Generally kids play with bits of trash or on abandoned scrap cars or with balloons made from condoms.  Please pray with us for God’s wisdom as we engage the locals to help us and see this project through.”
