Teaching and children’s ministry in Tanzania

Could you use your love for young people, and skills in children’s ministry to reach the unreached Nyamwezi people in Tanzania? Or could you use your professional teaching skills to serve the community and build relationships in order to build a platform to share the Gospel?

Background

The team will work amongst the unreached Nyamwezi people in the central Tanzanian region of Tabora. The Nyamwezi are largely Islamic and are the second largest tribe in Tanzania, 1-2 million strong. There are also Christian believers from various people groups and denominations in the area and, they too, need to be discipled and encouraged to reach their Muslim neighbours as many fear doing so.

Vision & Strategy

The vision is to reach the Nyamwezi in Tabora region through living as a gospel witness, building relationships with leaders in the surrounding villages, and to find bridge people – those who accept the gospel message and can help us take it to the rest of their people group. These people will be found in the community through building relationships through friendships, school connections, chronological Bible storying, obedience-based discipleship groups, and through conservation agriculture seminars.

Ministry & type of work

We are looking for people who will be willing to do children’s Bible clubs as an outreach to the Nyamwezi as well as be involved in weekly Community Bible Study (CBS) classes for all ages as well as Sunday School classes. We are also looking for teachers to be involved in the government schools to build relationships with Nyamwezi students and their families through direct teaching and after school tuition.

Qualifications & Experience

Team members will be expected to learn the national language of Kiswahili their first year of service, at least reaching the AIM language standard of Level 2. Minimum time commitment of two years.

FAQS

We’ll work with you to explore the best education options available for your children. Some families homeschool their children, some enrol their children at one of AIM’s schools as boarders or day students (Rift Valley Academy in Kenya, Wellspring Academy in Chad or Haven of Peace Academy in Tanzania), and some enrol their children in a national school.

Hannah who now works at Wellspring Academy talks about the role of missionary teachers:

Absolutely! We love to talk to you if you are interested in serving in Africa, to help you access information, match your skills and interest to opportunities and encourage you as you journey into whatever God has for you. We'd love to support you in whatever ways possible so do get in touch!

Every mission organisation is different, and no one organisation is necessarily better than another. It’s more about finding an organisation that’s a good fit for you, where your calling and the organisation’s calling and values are a good match. AIM’s emphasis is on reaching those who have yet to hear the gospel, and all our ministry - long and short term - is designed to see Christ-centred churches among all African peoples. Regardless of how long you serve for and the different gifts, skills and experience you bring with you, your ministry will be part of that bigger goal. That may mean going to difficult or hard to reach places to share the gospel. Working in partnership with the local church in Africa, we labour for the over 300 million people living in Africa who have little opportunity to hear the gospel, and even less to be discipled as a follower of Jesus. Is God calling you to go to them?

Listen to Tim Matthews, one of our Mission Advisors, explaining why we’re passionate about reaching those who have yet to hear the gospel:

Hannah

As a missionary teacher I’ve seen how vital on-field teaching support is. Not just for the parents but for their children too.
