Train leaders in Mozambique

Could you use your teaching experience and theological training to train church leaders in Mozambique?

Location

Beira, Mozambique

Background

The Sofala Bible Institute offers five courses: Sunday school teacher training, Basic Bible studies, Certificates in Theology (Lower and Upper Secondary) and a Bachelor’s in Theology. Many of the courses are taught by Mozambican professors trained by Sofala, but the Bachelor’s course is still dependent on missionary professors.

Vision and strategy

Sofala’s vision is to train and disciple Mozambican Christian workers for diverse ministries in the church, in order to build up Christ-centred churches committed to God’s mission in the world. It seeks to encourage missionary vision, both in the institute and the churches which it serves, to see them sending and supporting national missionaries to their own people and others. The aim is for Sofala to be a Mozambican evangelical institution of theological education, led by Mozambicans, capable of generating and managing resources with a view to becoming self-supporting.

Ministry and type of work

Sofala needs someone who can be involved in biblical and theological training at the Upper Secondary and Bachelor’s levels, being available to help the other levels and courses should it be necessary. Could you work with Sofala to see the transformation of lives as well as the transfer of abilities, training and equipping Mozambicans to take on roles themselves?

FAQS

Where you will serve and what your ministry will be are often two of the biggest issues that people think about. We will work with you and your church to ascertain the direction the Lord is leading. At the same time, you need to carefully consider AIM as an organisation and whether you and your church would be happy to partner with us.

On almost every assignment you will need to learn another language and sometimes we recommend some language training before you leave. We recognise the value of building relationships and making disciples by communicating with people in their own language. This is especially true for those applying long term. Language learning is part of the TIMO programme, and when necessary, language school (in the UK, Africa, or elsewhere) is an option. In some positions and areas English might be enough to get by, but we strongly emphasise local language learning as a way to engage and reach local people with the gospel.

Yes. The Bible makes it clear that the church sends missionaries (e.g. Acts 13) and has an ongoing pastoral responsibility for them. As much as AIM is a key partner in the process and facilitates ministry in Africa, we will not accept into membership anyone who does not have a positive recommendation and support from their church. AIM will discuss your application with your church leaders – after all they know you better than we do – as together we seek to discern that this is God’s calling for you.

A number of pastors also share their thoughts in these clips:

Claudia Middendorf

A few months ago I led a Discovery Bible Study (DBS) group with a few interested people. After studying through Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, the one participating pastor said to me, “Along the years I have taken many courses and been to Bible school for three years. I have learned to interpret the Bible. Only now have I learned to let it speak to me personally.”

Mozambique

Since independence from Portugal in 1975 Mozambique was battered by civil war, economic woes and famine. Since peace in 1992 though, the country has developed one of the world’s fastest growing economies. Many are still unreached with the gospel and 17% of the country practice Islam. LEARN MORE
