She has been asked to train some midwives in the care of small babies. Many of the midwives aren\u2019t paid &#8211; they are counted as \u2018interns\u2019, waiting for a paid slot to open up (although the hospital couldn\u2019t function without them). On the days they\u2019re not on shift, they are usually making money by working in their family shop, sewing, and baking things to sell. If they are wanted at the hospital on a day they\u2019re not on shift, they have to be paid enough that they won\u2019t lose money being there, and have their food paid for as they won\u2019t be at home to cook. Therefore, a training day for all midwives requires significant funding. Though Elle\u2019s team often helps the hospital out by paying small amounts for stationery, medication, equipment etc, they don\u2019t want to provide large amounts of money. They want them to find locally available, sustainable sources of funding. However, the local public health funding body has closed.
