I am from Northern Ireland, however, most of my adult life pre Kenya was in Glasgow where I studied and worked as a Chemistry teacher. I have had a passion for overseas mission since childhood and, after some years teaching chemistry in Glasgow, I really felt God was telling me it was my time to go.

I am now in my third year being part of the Rift Valley Academy community as a chemistry and science teacher. Rift Valley Academy in Kijabe is AIM’s boarding school which educates and disciples students from missionary families serving across Africa. Over this first period of service I have really learnt that being part of RVA as a teacher involves far more other things than just teaching. We are the “safe people” in so many of the students lives. I get to be their sport coach, their mentor, their dorm cover, their sponsor, their hiking guide and so so much more.

Through all of these I get to form deeper relationships with the students allowing me to walk with them on their journey with God. This can be via lunch time mentoring, regular classroom visits during my preparation periods or Friday night pizza and games nights at my house. It is during these times that some of my fondest memories are made. It has been a joy being able to answer my call to be a safe person to these students as their parents answer their calling to take the Gospel message to the unreached people groups in Africa.

So much of my first term of service I was learning and I am excited to go into this second term with more confidence and understanding of what my mission field looks like. One main lesson is that you will never know what the day will bring or what change is about to shake things up so my dependence in God is as important as ever.
